BEST MATTRESSES DETAILED

OUR STAFF PICKS

These are a few of the our team’s personal favorites. Whether they’re beds some people sleeping on or ones we voted as the very best of the best, these mattresses are true standouts in our publication.

CASPER

With beds to satisfy almost every need (from the budget-friendly Essential into the lavish Wave), Casper mattresses are worth all of the hype.

While I think most people could benefit from a night’s rest on a Casper, I’d mostly recommend them for anyone who suffers from chronic back or side pain. This is for a few reasons but mostly has to do with the fact that all of the brand’s mattresses use hybrid construction, which combines different foams together for maximum pressure

DREAMCLOUD

Time to update your mattress and searching through the bed in a box market for the first time? The DreamCloud is a excellent option for those that want the luxury feel and support of a conventional innerspring mattress with the simplicity of installation and worth cost of a bed in a box.

The DreamCloud includes a tall hybrid construction with pressure relieving foam on top and a pocketed coil support layer which provides a firm feel that’s excellent for back and stomach sleepers. Another piece of the construction that I really like is that the high density polyfoam edge support which allows people to sleep close to the side of the bed without collapsing the borders, a great feature for couples who need the entire surface of the bed.

WINKBEDS

If you’re searching for an ultra-supportive bed, you might want to consider getting your hands on a WinkBeds mattress. Constructed with foam and two layers of coils, this bed is fantastic for both combo sleepers and heavier people who need a little bit of lift to their mattress.

The bed also comes in three different firmness options, so you’ll be able to tailor the mattress to your particular sleep preferences. Another wonderful feature? The coil-on-coil structure produces a bunch of airflow throughout the structure, ensuring that things will stay nice and cool throughout the night.

PRESSURE RELIEF

If you are sleeping on a mattress you inherited from your Great Aunt Theresa or one a former roommate left behind in your flat, odds are you have surrendered yourself to the fact that it likely doesn’t satisfy your precise needs. But so what? It was free, right?

The area in which it probably lets you down the most is pressure relief, or its ability to soothe strain in problem areas such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Of all of the changes you’ll see in a new bed purchase, the biggest is most likely the difference that comes from moving from the old mattress to one which provides ample comfort and relief. Suggestion: The latter is much, much better for you and your health.

You can find this pressure relief in a number of ways, but I would say the easiest is to go with a mattress which has a durable base (of either pocketed coils or high-density poly foam) complimented by thick layers of contouring foam.  Mattress Sales Asheville

PURPLE

If you’re fairly certain that your sleeping issues stem from a lack of pressure relief, then I’d suggest checking out the Purple mattress. The bed’s unique hyper-elastic polymer grid provides excellent comfort and relief to the lower back and shoulders because its walls collapse to fill in the spaces at these areas.

While this might not sound any different from the pressure relief you’d get from memory foam or latex, I’d argue that this grid stands a head above the rest because of how supportive it is; basically, you get to sink without feeling stuck in the arrangement. This may spell good news for a wide variety of sleepers who wish to feel as if they’re sleeping on top of the bed as opposed to in it.

LEESA

The Leesa is a standout in this category for me because of how great it is at providing uniform pressure relief across the body no matter one’s sleeping position.

While most all-foam beds are fairly good at supplying relief to side and back sleepers, the Leesa is also able to satisfy stomach sleepers because of its top layer of Avena foam. This material is soft yet responds quickly to pressure, lifting up the sleeper and positioning them on top of the bed. This gives relief to the chest and hips, crucial problem areas for people who doze primarily on their stomachs.

GHOSTBED LUXE

If you’re following both pressure relief and temperature regulation, then I would recommend checking out the GhostBed Luxe. Does this all-foam mattress provide targeted relief to sensitive regions, but it is also outfitted with a lot of really innovative cooling technology.

On the pressure relief front, the use of memory foam and the brand’s proprietary Bounce Foam makes a stellar balance of sinkage and support. This means there’s both contouring to relieve strain in the shoulders and lower back as well as plenty of lift to maintain the spine in a healthy alignment.

BEST MATTRESSES FOR BACK PAIN

Do you ever wake up in the morning with a dull, throbbing pain in your lumbar area? Do you toss and turn in the night seeking out that magical position which may ease the distress along your spine? If so, you might just suffer from chronic back pain and might possibly use a mattress upgrade to help with this back pain.

I should note that back pain can result from numerous lifestyle, genetic, and physical elements, so I like to consider changing your mattress as only one of several measures that could be taken to deal with the issue. If you are suffering from back pain, it’s best to consult with a medical professional to develop a plan that’ll tackle the underlying causes and symptoms. Bear in mind, nothing on this page should be taken as medical advice.

That having been said, a general rule of thumb is that you’ll need a supportive bed (note that firmness does NOT always equal support) with a soothing foam top layer to fill in the area at your lumbar area. You’ll also want something that keeps your shoulders in a wonderful alignment with your hips and is, of course, comfortable.  Mattress Sales Asheville

LEESA

If your main woe comes from stress in your upper back, you will want to be certain that you snag a bed that gives as much pressure relief from the lumbar region as it does in the shoulders. The important thing here is a soft yet supportive foam top layer that will offer an even combination of support throughout the body. Enter the all-foam Leesa mattress.

I like this mattress for back pain problems due to the order of its foam layers, with a section of buoyant Avena foam on top of one of memory foam. This placement may not seem like a huge deal, but it actually does a lot of good work to alleviate tension in the back. The sleeper gets to sink in for pressure relief but is also buoyed in addition to the structurewithout needing to sacrifice comfort for assistance.

BEAR

For those athletic sleepers in the group who suffer back pain from long days spent in the gym or out on the field, the Bear mattress could be an ideal bed for you. Designed with functionality in mind, the Bear is outfitted with graphite-infused memory foam for temperature regulation and comfort as well as a Celliant-blend cover, which some studies suggest can help with recovery.

The bed also sleeps firm, with my testers giving it an average firmness rating of 7, which you may compare to the business standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness. This is a terrific level for many back sleepers, as it translates to solid support across the body.

CASPER

A current trend in mattress design would be to include zoned support in the layers of the bed. What this means is that one or two sections inside a mattress will be comprised of not just a single type of foam (say, memory foam) but a mixture of materials of different firmnesses. Essentially, the goal is to target different areas of the body in various ways to achieve the ultimate in comfort.

In my opinion, one of those best examples of zoned support out there may be found in the Casper. The all-foam bed involves a transition layer built with two different kinds of poly foam: a milder one in the ends of the bed and a firmer one in the center. This placement offers pressure relief to the neck and feet while also bringing solid support to the thoracic area, a fantastic combination for anyone dealing with back pain.

BEST INNERSPRING

So far as mattresses are involved, there is perhaps nothing more classic than an old-fashioned innerspring. These vibrant beds reigned supreme long before the advent of all-foam versions, and though they have definitely waned in popularity over the years, there are still a number of solid layouts out there in the world.

But what makes a great innerspring bed? In my opinion, a quality innerspring has to sleep cool and possess excellent bounce as well as enough support to keep you from feeling stuck in the structure.

WINKBEDS

Though innersprings are usually better for stomach and back sleepers, those who doze primarily on their sides may still find a lot to enjoy in one of these mattresses, as long as they incorporate a foam comfort layer for pressure relief.

1 such mattress which does this well is the WinkBeds mattress. Straightaway, the sleeper will experience two inches of super-soft gel memory foam, which offers immediate comfort and contouring to the shoulders and hips. Directly below this layer, you will find a coil-on-coil design that evokes the buoyant support of traditional innersprings.  Mattress Sales Asheville

SAATVA

If you suffer from back pain, you’ll want a mattress that’s likely to fill in the space at your lumbar region with a few targeted pressure relief. There are not a lot of innersprings that can do so, but mercifully, the Saatva’s got your back (see what I did there?) .

Does the coil-on-coil design produce a bouncy mattress that keeps the sleeper in addition to the structure, but the bed also offers a zoned lumbar area specifically designed to alleviate back pain. This greatly reduces the amount of pressure that is likely to form and creates amazing comfort.

BEST ADJUSTABLE FIRMNESS

As you have likely noticed, the majority of the info I have provided thus far is terrific for sleepers who know just what they want in their bed. But what about if you’re not so sure? Yes, you need pressure relief at your shoulders, but does this mean you need to sacrifice firmness? What about if your sleeping habits change on a dime based on what you do during the day?

If any of these thoughts ring true, you may want to invest in a bed with adjustable firmness. These models include layers which can be switched around or modified depending upon your needs in the present time, oscillating between the two firm and soft textures.

LAYLA

The Layla is an all-foam mattress unique in that it’s double-sided, therefore it can be oriented to feature a firm or soft texture based on a sleeper’s preferences. I should note that while you might think this flippability would lead to totally striking firmness differences, when my testers tried out the bed in both iterations, they gave the firmer side an average rating of 6.5/10 and the milder side a 5.5/10.

This duality makes the Layla a solid alternative for both sleepers and couples, who will change the feel of the mattress whenever they have to shake up things from the bedroom.

LUXI 3-IN-1

As the name implies, the Luxi 3-in-1 mattress is a pretty unique product in the sleeping world, as it could be oriented to achieve the feels of three totally different beds. What this basically means is that the mattress’s four layers can be flipped, switched, and organized to produce either a soft, medium-firm, or firm sleeping experience. This is great for sleepers who aren’t entirely sure about the sort of vibe they’re after or ones who simply prefer to change things up every once in a while.

NATUREPEDIC

Another customizable choice is this eco-friendly mattress from Naturepedic. This hybrid bed is built with an organic cotton cover, a thick coating of all-natural latex, and a part of individually wrapped coils for stress relief and support.

An added bonus of the bed is that it is flexible and comes in a couple of different firmness options, including firm, cushion firm, plush, and ultra plush. The layers you need to create these different feels will arrive in four different boxes, which you’ll then assemble to your satisfaction. Plus, if you sleep with a partner and are looking for a mattress with different firmness levels, Naturepedic is more than pleased to create a personalized split layout for you and your bedmate.  Mattress Sales Asheville

BEST HYBRID

While some sleepers have particular feels they want from their mattresses (e.g., luxurious foam or elastic coils), an even larger majority of us prefer a combo platter of sorts when it comes to our beds. We like memory foam but do not need five inches of the stuff to feel comfortable. We want sinkage, but not too much, and a dollop of contouring, but only if it’s counteracted by the bouncy support of pocketed coils.

If any of this sounds familiar, you might be on the market for a hybrid . These beds ditch the”all-X” structures of other models in favor of ones that combine materials to get a sleeping experience that truly does it all.

DREAMCLOUD

The excellent thing about hybrid mattresses is their ability to combine the pressure relief of foam with the aligning support of springs and the DreamCloud does exactly that. The gentle foam on top is wonderful for comfort and the latex layers actually help dissipate body heat to help sleep a bit cooler.

The DreamCloud’s pocketed coil system gives the mattress a solid feeling like a traditional innerspring mattress. The blend of latex layers and rebound from the coil system cause the sleeper to feel more on top of the mattress, allowing them to change positions without feeling stuck in the layers.

NEST BEDDING ALEXANDER HYBRID

With their ultra-supportive pocketed coil systems, many hybrids are amazing for sleepers who suffer with chronic pain. However, I would say my favorite from the group would have to be the Nest Bedding Alexander Hybrid, which unites this service with a super-soft foam-quilted cover for stress relief.

This means that as soon as you lie on the bed, you are going to experience immediate comfort as you sink through the cover and into the gel-infused memory foam directly below it. The materials are designed to fill in the area at your lumbar region and alleviate the formation of pressure points throughout your body.

BROOKLYN BEDDING SIGNATURE

And last but certainly not least, no hybrid category would be complete without a nod to the Brooklyn Bedding Signature. This hybrid mattress is a revamped version of the brand’s flagship mattress and combines lush foam with pocketed coils for an impressive sleeping experience.

Here, the relief element comes from four inches of the brand’s proprietary TitanFlex foam, a soft substance that also responds quickly to pressure. This bounce is doubled as soon as you add in the mattress’s pocketed coil system, which imbues the mattress with some outstanding lift. The resulting structure permits you to sink in for lovely comfort while also keeping you positioned on top of the mattress, a win-win in my book.

BEST MEMORY FOAM

What would a best mattress guide be without a section devoted to memory foam? Nearly every bed-in-a-box retailer uses the material in some fashion, either quilted to a cover or as the primary relaxation layer of one of its mattresses.  Mattress Sales Asheville

As a mattress material, memory foam is best known for its deep contouring and sinkage. At their best, these properties can supply the sleeper with enormous pressure relief and comfort. However, the foam can also overheat and produce too intense of a”hug” that’ll leave you feeling stuck in the mattress. The key, then, is balance and finding a mattress that knows how to perform memory foam right.

NECTAR

Featuring several layers of memory foam (including an inch quilted into the cover), the Nectar mattress is an perfect fit for anyone looking for a mattress that really embodies the timeless material. This translates to is a whole lot of sinkage and body contouring for some super pleasing pressure relief.

And while memory foam has a bit of a reputation for overheating, Nectar employs a gel infusion in its own foam layers to make certain that things stay cool while you sleep. Add to this a relatively low motion transfer and you have got yourself a bed that’s as cozy for one as it’s for two.

AMERISLEEP

If you’re interested in buying a memory foam mattress chiefly because of its pressure-relieving advantages, you may want to consider snagging one of the great beds from the Amerisleep suite of mattresses. The line boasts five different models, which range from AS1 (super firm) all the way to AS5 (pillowy soft).

While the firmness range here is quite extreme, what unifies these mattresses is their excellent use of memory foam. As employed in the Amerisleep line, the memory foam functions in tandem with the other substances to soothe restlessness, provide fantastic comfort, and dissipate motion disturbance across the structure.

LOOM & LEAF

Another great memory foam option is your Loom & Leaf, which are my top pick for couples. It features a super-soft foam-quilted cover, a gel-infused comfort layer, and a section of memory foam for compression service.

This combo of lush materials allows the mattress to truly embody all of the best characteristics of the classic material, namely its deep body contouring and sinkage. In the event you and your spouse are both fans of memory foam or may simply benefit from the wonderful pressure relief it’ll provide, you can not go wrong with this mattress.

BEST LATEX

If memory foam is not really your thing, perhaps you’ll be more in the marketplace for a mattress built with latex. Unlike memory foam, this material is known for its bounce, coolingsystem, and responsiveness, producing beds that are both comfortable and buoyant.

For my money, the best latex mattresses use the foam to endow the arrangement with lift and breathability, either as a fun accent involving softer layers or as a main star in its own right. Another excellent benefit of latex is that it is relatively easy to produce organically, making it a fantastic choice for environmentally conscious sleepers.  Mattress Sales Asheville

ZENHAVEN

If you need something with a lot of bounce, consider opting for a firmer latex mattress such as the Zenhaven. This one’s completely built of all-natural Talalay latex, making for a compact bed that’s both buoyant and pressure-relieving.

As you’re planning to sink slightly through the top comfort layer, the latex does a fantastic job of lifting up the sleeper and out of the structure, helping to keep the spine in a great alignment. Not to mention that this bed is reversible, featuring both a lavish orientation (average firmness rating of 5.4/10) and a gentle firm one (average firmness rating of 6.75/10), meaning you can always change things up to meet your requirements.

CEDAR

For those eco-friendly dreamers eager to get their hands on an amazing latex mattress, the Cedar from Brentwood Home might be the ideal bed.

The mattress is built with a typical hybrid design of foam comfort layers and a tall part of individually wrapped coils, but what sets it apart are the green materials used throughout. An organic wool cover gives way to a series of all-natural latex layers, which comprise the comfortable section of the bed. And below the pocketed coils, you will find a coconut husk base, which provides the structure with some stability.

NEST BEDDING HYBRID LATEX

And lastly, there is the Nest Bedding Hybrid Latex, which is my top pick for anybody looking for a latex hybrid.

This mattress is constructed with layers of organic cotton, all-natural Talalay latex foam, and pocketed coils, stacking up to an impressive 13 inches of relaxation. The combination of materials creates a pleasant medium-firm texture (my testers gave it an average firmness score of 6.4/10) that offers loads of pressure relief without that stuck-in-the-bed feeling. And like other latex mattresses, this Nest bed sleeps super-cool.

BEST BUDGET

Whether their substances warrant the cost or not, the unfortunate fact is that the majority of beds are really pricey. While you must always think of a mattress buy as an investment in your overall well-being, this doesn’t mean that you need to shell out thousands of dollars to secure a good night’s rest.

In fact, there are a lot of marvelous beds out there that aren’t just incredibly comfortable but also cheap enough to leave both you and your wallet grinning from ear to ear. Read on for some best-value mattress picks.

GHOSTBED

My favorite mattress for the price is the GhostBed, which unites latex, gel-infused memory foam, and durable poly foam to get a sleeping experience that is cool, supportive, and incredibly pressure-relieving. The mattress also has great motion transfer and border support, which makes for a well-rounded mattress that’s as good for a single sleeper because it is for a set of bedmates with different sleep preferences. With all of these great qualities, this bed has to be super-expensive, right? Wrong! A GhostBed queen just costs $795, which can be quite the steal in the internet mattress world.

TUFT & NEEDLE

Tuft & Needle has long been a favorite among bed-in-a-box fans, as much for its no-fuss foam structure as for its low price point. In comparison to other mattresses on the marketplace, its queen size cost of just $575 is super-affordable and available to sleepers of many different budgets. When you add in its own excellent motion transfer, deep pressure relief, and buoyant, medium-firm feel, this is a mattress that is truly tough to pass up.

SPINDLE

If you are looking to snag a great deal on a more luxurious mattress, look no farther than the Spindle. This bed is crafted with all-natural materials, including wool batting, organic cotton, and three layers of Dunlop latex. What is unique about the Spindle is that it’s fully adjustable. After filling out a quick questionnaire (outlining your weight, age, and sleep tastes ), Spindle will send you a customized package of latex layers, which you’ll then build at home to your own specifications. The result is a bouncy and trendy mattress tailor-made to your comfort at a price that can not be beat.

BEST MATTRESSES FOR COUPLES

When considering what makes a bed great for couples, I consider a few different factors. Namely, I’m interested in figuring out how much of the surface area of the mattress you’re going to be able to use and whether you’re going to be disturbed by your partner’s moves in the middle of the night.

That means I’m going to be drawn to beds which feature less motion transfer and excellent edge support. I will also be on the lookout for mattresses which exhibit feels that appeal to sleepers with different tastes, since even the most suitable partners can snooze in distinct ways.

PUFFY

The Puffy mattress, dubbed “the Internet’s most comfortable mattress” was designed and developed with the newest technology and premium excellent foam layers. It’s handmade and 100% manufactured in the USA.

The mattress is excellent for all kinds of sleepers since it poses a moderate level of firmness together with a sleeping surface that seems just like a cloud.

After 4 decades of study, foam formulas, growth, sleep trials, and hundreds of hours of optimizing the memory layers, then the Puffy mattress was created and designed to guarantee a sleep surface that’ll be ideal for a deep, restorative sleep.  Mattress Sales Asheville

The Puffy mattress is just one of the most recent goods in the mattress marketplace and the organization believes they have crafted the best sleep system which will offer a cozy sleep on sleepers of all ages, sizes, and sleeping habits.

NECTAR

Whether you are simply moving in with a new spouse or struggling to make ends meet after a wedding, value can sometimes be the main element for couples to consider when creating a major mattress purchase. So before getting intimidated by some of the heftier price tags in this roundup, rest easy: I have you!

Say hello to the Nectar mattress. Built with a thick layer of memory foam, this mattress gives off a luxurious vibe for a fraction of the cost of similar mattresses on the market: At $795 for a queen, it is practically a steal! This combined with the mattress’s exceedingly great motion transfer results make it a wonderful option for couples on a budget.

SAPIRA

As I mentioned up top, edge support will be among the main things for couples to take into account, as it will let them know whether they’ll have the ability to use the entire surface of the mattress. While there are a good deal of mattresses offering great edge support, I’d say my favorite would have to be the Sapira.

This hybrid mattress is created by Leesa and uses a mixture of Avena and memory foams for pressure relief in addition to a pocketed coil system for support. The interplay of these different materials produces a solid sense of security that’s as strong at the center as it is in the sides, ensuring that you will never feel like you’re going to roll out of bed in the middle of the night.

BEST FOR SIDE SLEEPERS

When buying a new mattress, side sleepers are interested in being extra-careful about the kind of bed they purchase. If it’s too firm, pressure points are likely to form in the shoulders and hips. If it’s too soft, the sinkage could throw the spine out of alignment.

Personally, I find the best mattress type for side sleepers is one which has gentle top layers for cushiony support as well as a good base to keep these plush materials stabilized. The trick is to get a mattress which pushes back as much as you push in so you never feel completely engulfed by the arrangement.

TOMORROW SLEEP

When side sleepers hear about the addition of pocketed coils in a bed, their first thought might be something along the lines of,”This bed is going to be way too firm for me!” Sometimes, this is correct, but other times, it is not. Take the Tomorrow Sleep, by way of example, which is designed with coils, yes, but also a great deal of pressure-relieving foam.

The bed comes in two firmness options (soft and firm), each of which include memory foam and poly foam edge support. I would suggest that side sleepers take a look at the soft version, as it comprises three inches of memory foam up top for some pleasant design and relief.

CASPER WAVE

Billed as Casper’s most advanced mattress, the Wave is a fantastic alternative for side sleepers, as its five-foam-layer construction is designed especially with pressure relief in mind.

This construction involves an interesting mix of bouncy latex, plush memory foam, and durable poly foam, which produces both deep body contouring and a pleasant lift. So while your shoulders and hips are likely to experience a good deal of cushiony support, this sinkage isn’t going to leave you feeling trapped at the materials.

BEST AT SLEEPING COOL

For a few of you out there, relaxation is going to be about pressure relief and support and more about temperature regulation. If you are a sleeper that runs hot, your primary focus is most likely going to be on figuring out the way to sleep as cool as possible.

As you begin your search, stay on the lookout for beds with individually wrapped coils, as the spaces between the packets encourage airflow throughout the construction. Latex is also perfect for cooling, since the material is excellent at absorbing and dispersing heat. Memory foam is traditionally not the best at keeping things cool, but often, the material will be infused with gel to fight this feature.

BROOKLYN BEDDING AURORA

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora is a fantastic mattress for people who need to sleep cool. Boasting a hybrid design, the mattress is built with a super-tall pocketed coil support system (8 inches of individually wrapped coils), which generates dynamic breathability.

The mattress also has a phase shift cover, which is really cool to the touch and helps to absorb the sleeper’s body warmth. In addition to these terrific features, the Aurora also has excellent edge support and motion transfer, which would allow it to be an awesome option for couples looking to keep things cool in the bedroom.

PURPLE

While there are a great deal of things for sleepers to love about a Purple (both its pressure-relieving support and fantastic movement transfer results come to mind), the characteristic that may be most attractive is that it is technically”temperature neutral.”

So what exactly does this term mean? Great question! Basically, it means that the mattress’s hyper-elastic polymer comfort layer (yes, that purple grid) is particularly good at dispersing heat because of its open structure. This creates a pleasant balance throughout the mattress and ensures that one’s internal body temperature will not be a preventative factor in getting a good night’s sleep.  Mattress Sales Asheville

GHOSTBED LUXE

Marketed as the”coolest bed in the world,” the GhostBed Luxe was crafted for people that sleep hot.

The mattress combats overheating with a phase-change cover, which regulates body temperature, in addition to a thick comfort layer of gel memory foam. As we discussed in the intro, gel infusions help to counteract the overheating properties of the substance, allowing sleepers to enjoy all of the foam’s great benefits (sinkage, body contouring( pressure relief) without becoming too hot.

ADDITIONAL BEST MATTRESS CATEGORIES

We’ve got loads of mattress choices across Sleepopolis, and below are a few other popular categories, including the best mattress for heavy sleepers (250 pounds and up), best for combo sleepers, and best for stomach sleepers. Be sure to check around our website for a lot more picks based on your own tastes, positions, and body type!

BEST FOR HEAVIER SLEEPERS

When searching for a new bed, it can feel as if there are a lot of complicating factors to think about: materials, design, and price are just a few. While these are all important things to consider, one factor which should never make your mattress look harder is your weight.

If you are a heavier sleeper, this may seem easier said than done, but there are actually a lot of fantastic beds out there built for sleepers of all different sizes, weights, and body types. These mattresses take everything that works well in other models (satisfying pressure relief, great support, cozy materials) and amp them up for an even more optimal sleeping experience.

BIG FIG

My favorite bed for heavier sleepers is hands down the Big Fig, as it had been specifically intended for those who weigh over 300 pounds.

A hybrid construction combines a high part of durable poly foams with bouncy pocketed coils to get a firm and supportive feel. This mix of materials is finessed to keep sleepers lying on top of the bed rather than in it, which is important for those who tend to sink straight through softer layers. Plus, every Big Fig includes a specialized foundation, which adds even more durability and shape to the overall structure.

WINKBEDS PLUS

For heavier couples, there is no better mattress on the market than the WinkBeds Plus. This mattress is also outfitted with a hybrid design, which brings together bouncy latex with individually wrapped coils to get a sleep that’s as pressure-relieving as it’s supportive.

I should add that the pocketed coil system is zoned, providing the mattress with even more specialized support. As a consequence, you’ll able to use the entire surface area of the bed and are not going to feel stuck in the structure, which can occasionally be an issue for heavier sleepers lounging on beds not designed for their needs.

NEST BEDDING ALEXANDER SIGNATURE

Contrary to popular belief, memory foam isn’t the enemy of heavier sleepers. Though some say the substance’s classic design and sinkage properties don’t offer enough support to sleepers of different sizes, I’d argue that when combined with the right stuff, memory foam can bring a lot to the party!

A fantastic example of how this works is at the Nest Bedding Alexander Signature. The sleeper immediately meets a thick slab of 4-inch memory foam, which yields incredible body contouring. However, after sinking through this layer, they will encounter a collection of firmer foams, which help establish a healthy spine alignment and a great deal of solid support.

BEST FOR COMBO SLEEPERS

Having trouble deciding if you’re a tummy, back, or side sleeper? Do you have a tendency to fall asleep in one place and wake up in an entirely different one? Maybe you’re what I like to refer to as a combo sleeper, or someone who dozes in numerous positions.

What this means for your mattress hunt is that you’re basically going to be looking for a bed having an abysmal feel, preferably one that strikes a satisfying balance between all its different materials. So if it is a hybrid, for example, you’ll want to make certain that the pressure relief of the foam does not cut in the support of the pocketed coils and vice versa.

Below, check out some of the beds that I believe strike this balance especially well.

LEESA

For people who spend time slumbering in multiple positions, there is no better pick than the flagship Leesa mattress. The balanced foam texture combines pressure relief and support for a sleep that’s guaranteed to satisfy a wide assortment of sleepers.

I should note that the mattress is on the firmer side (my testers gave it an average firmness rating of 7/10) and does a great job of lifting the hips up and from the structure. Additionally, the mattress’s top layer of Avena foam imbues the bed with an additional oomph of inviting bounce to fight that stuck-in-the-bed feeling.

NEW PURPLE

Speaking of inviting bounce, one of the bounciest beds I have tried up to now in 2018 is the New Purple. This hybrid revamp of the brand’s flagship model comes in three different firmness levels, all which are designed to suit a broad range of sleepers.

Along with the buoyant lift from the layer of pocketed coils, the mattress also features a ton of pressure relief as a result of its hyper-elastic polymer comfort grid. This section is fantastic at evenly distributing weight across the bed, letting it specifically respond to different amounts of pressure from each part of the body. This means that regardless of how you sleep, you are bound to find some pretty incredible comfort.

NECTAR

Designed with a combination of memory foam and high-density poly foam, the Nectar is a super-comfortable mattress that offers awesome pressure relief in numerous positions.

While the nearly four inches of memory foam up top might make stomach and back sleepers run for the hills, the bed actually has a nice medium firmness to it, which means you’ll get a solid mixture of sinkage and support. This feel will satisfy a great deal of different sleepers, from those who want cushioning at the shoulders all the way to those needing targeted relief in the lumbar region.

BEST MATTRESSES FOR STOMACH SLEEPERS

If you are a stomach sleeper, you will want to find a firm mattress that’ll position your shoulders and hips in an even line. Sound easy enough? Unfortunately, not necessarily. A lot of beds which charge themselves as being firm sacrifice good support from the name of said firmness, leading to mattresses that don’t do much of anything in any way.   Mattress Sales Asheville

So the question remains: Are there beds out there that can keep a stomach sleeper’s body level enough for healthy spinal alignment while also being comfortable? The answer is a resounding YES!

For some examples, take a look at my favorite mattresses for stomach sleepers below.

WINKBEDS

Featuring coil-on-coil structure, the WinkBeds hybrid creates a wonderful mattress option for stomach sleepers. The combination of both microcoils and pocketed coils creates an ultra-supportive sleeping experience that keeps the sleeper positioned on top of the bed.

An added bonus is that the mattress also includes a plush pillow top for stress relief and comes in three different firmness options, so you will definitely have the ability to locate a model that matches your specific sleep needs.

ZENHAVEN

For those stomach sleepers searching for an all-foam mattress, you can not go wrong with the Zenhaven, which contrasts a bounty of buoyant support from its all-latex construction.

While you’ll likely experience a little bit of sinkage once you first lie down on the bed, you’ll find that the layers work together to buoy you on top of the mattress. This is terrific for stomach sleepers, who have to keep their shoulders and hips from sinking too far into the arrangement, which can throw their spinal alignment way out of whack. I should note that the Zenhaven comes in two firmness options: plush or firm.

BEST MATTRESS REQUIREMENTS AND SCORING

Finding the best mattress brands for 2018 wasn’t an easy task. There are hundreds of companies in the world, and I tested out and reviewed dozens of different versions in my quest to answer the seemingly innocuous question: What is the best mattress?

And even though I’ve landed on what I think are some really fabulous picks, I would like to admit that this list is constantly evolving and that my opinions are likely to change as newer beds emerge on the market.

That being said, all mattresses included on this list had to fulfill the following criteria:

TIME FRAME

My selections for the best mattresses to purchase in 2018 all had to be available in 2017 for at least six months prior to this review, with a slight advantage given to those models available for a year or longer.

Why is this significant? For one thing, the longer a company’s been in business, the more confidence I have in its ability to deliver on warranty promises, return policies, and product availability. Second, it tells me that people are responding to its goods, which means the materials are durable and the designs are well-executed. And finally, it implies that the company is going to be around for the long haul, which makes it a good investment.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

In my view, the total customer experience is just as important as an exceptional item. If a brand has an amazing mattress but negligent customer service representatives or confusing policies, I can’t in good faith include it on this list.

So how do I make sure that a firm has top-notch customer service? I’m constantly scouring the Web for third-party reviews, looking carefully to see if users have been neglected or obtained lackluster service from a particular retailer. I also keep my eyes on social media for any brand red flags, which I then investigate on my own.

Additionally, I rely on you all! If I detect that our amazing Sleepopolis readers are reacting in a particularly good or poor approach to a business, I’ll adjust my rankings so, always giving precedence to brands that have a killer history of positive customer service testimonials.

VALUE

As more and more bed-in-a-box companies surface in the digital ether, value has become an increasingly important factor for me to look at when choosing the best mattresses of any given calendar year.

And when I refer to value, I am not talking about a very low price point. A excellent value is achieved when the selling price is well below the average market cost for what you would ordinarily need to cover a mattress of the quality and performance. In this manner, mattresses at all points on the pricing scale can be considered an exceptional value.

COMPANY INTEGRITY

Last, but certainly not least, let’s talk about company integrity. While different folks will think about ethics in different ways, for me, it comes down to a few crucial questions:

  • How does a company treat its customers, both those that are happy and those with complaints?
  • How transparent is a brand about the kinds of materials it uses and from where it sources those materials?
  • Has the company received any accolades voted on by users?
  • What, if any, outreach did the company do in 2017? In 2018?
  • What are some of the brand’s key values? How does it enact those values in its day-to-day operations?

It doesn’t take long to figure out the answers to those questions, and once I do, I use them to notify my rankings as much as comfort or price. In my experience, the best mattress manufacturers are those which not only want to be the best but truly want to do right by the sleepers who rest on their beds night after night.

If you’re in search of the best mattress, there are a few other questions that you may want answered also.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A MATTRESS?

To find their very best mattress, most buyers will consider price, firmness, adjustability, and sleep style before purchasing. You may want to consult your physician first if you experience any kind of pain after sleeping. This can help you choose the best mattress for you.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED A NEW MATTRESS?

How long is a mattress supposed to last? Regardless of what kind of mattress you purchase, most should be replaced every ten years for a great night’s rest and optimum comfort. Even in case you find your dream mattress, you’ll want to consider a replacement in 10 years.  Mattress Sales Asheville
