BEST MATTRESS BRANDS 2018

What is the best mattress of 2018? As always, feel free to navigate to the sections that talk to you using the table of contents below.

I have chosen to break down my selection of best mattresses to purchase into these categories for the simple reason that the best mattress type for one kind of sleeper isn’t necessarily going to be the best for another. To find out more about how I made my picks, jump into the Best Mattress Criteria section of the guide.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

BEST MATTRESSES DETAILED

OUR STAFF PICKS

These are a few of the our team’s personal favorites. Whether they are beds some people sleep on or ones we voted as the top of the best, these mattresses are true standouts in our publication.

CASPER

With beds to satisfy nearly every need (from the budget-friendly Essential to the lavish Wave), Casper mattresses are worth all of the hype.

While I think most people could benefit from a night’s rest on a Casper, I’d primarily recommend them for anyone who suffers from chronic back or side pain. This is for a few reasons but mostly has to do with the fact that all of the brand’s mattresses use hybrid foam construction, which unites different foams together for maximum pressure

DREAMCLOUD

Time to update your mattress and looking through the bed in a box market for the first time? The DreamCloud is a great option for those that want the luxury feel and support of a traditional innerspring mattress with the ease of setup and worth cost of a bed in a box.

The DreamCloud has a tall hybrid construction with pressure relieving foam on top and a pocketed coil support layer that offers a firm feel that’s excellent for back and stomach sleepers. Another piece of the construction that I really like is that the high density polyfoam border support which allows people to sleep near the side of the bed without collapsing the borders, a terrific feature for couples who need the whole surface of the mattress.

WINKBEDS

If you’re looking for an ultra-supportive bed, you may want to think about getting your hands on a WinkBeds mattress. Constructed with foam and two layers of coils, this bed is fantastic for both combo sleepers and heavier individuals who need a bit of lift to their mattress.

The bed also comes in three different firmness options, so you’ll be able to tailor the mattress to your particular sleep preferences. Another wonderful feature? The coil-on-coil structure creates a ton of airflow throughout the structure, ensuring that things are going to stay nice and cool during the night.

PRESSURE RELIEF

If you’re sleeping on a mattress you inherited from your Great Aunt Theresa or one a former roommate left behind in your apartment, odds are you have surrendered yourself to the fact that it likely doesn’t satisfy your specific needs. But so what? It was free, right?

The area where it probably lets you down the most is pressure relief, or its ability to soothe strain in problem areas such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Of all of the changes you’ll see in a new bed purchase, the biggest is most likely the difference that comes from moving from the old mattress to one which offers ample comfort and relief. Suggestion: The latter is much, much better for you and your wellbeing.

You’ll find this strain relief in a number of ways, but I would say the easiest is to decide on a mattress that features a durable base (of either pocketed coils or high-density poly foam) complimented by thick layers of contouring foam.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

PURPLE

If you are fairly certain that your sleeping issues stem from a lack of pressure relief, I’d suggest checking out the Purple mattress. The bed’s unique hyper-elastic polymer grid offers excellent comfort and relief to the lower back and shoulders because its walls fall to fill in the spaces in these regions.

Though this might not seem any different from the pressure relief you would get from memory foam or latex, I’d argue that this grid stands a head above the rest because of how supportive it is; essentially, you get to sink in without feeling stuck in the arrangement. This will spell good news for a vast array of sleepers who wish to feel as though they’re sleeping on top of the bed as opposed to in it.

LEESA

The Leesa is a standout in this category for me because of how good it is at providing uniform pressure relief across the body regardless of one’s sleeping position.

While most all-foam beds are fairly good at supplying relief to side and back sleepers, the Leesa is also able to satisfy stomach sleepers because of its top layer of Avena foam. This material is soft yet reacts quickly to pressure, lifting the sleeper up and positioning them in addition to the bed. This gives relief to the torso and buttocks, crucial problem areas for people who doze primarily on their stomachs.

GHOSTBED LUXE

If you are after both pressure relief and temperature regulation, then I’d recommend checking out the GhostBed Luxe. Does this all-foam mattress provide targeted relief to sensitive areas, but it’s also outfitted with a lot of really innovative cooling tech.

On the pressure relief front, using memory foam and the brand’s proprietary Bounce Foam makes a stellar equilibrium of sinkage and support. This means there is both contouring to alleviate strain in the shoulders and lower back as well as plenty of lift to maintain the spine in a healthy alignment.

BEST MATTRESSES FOR BACK PAIN

Do you ever wake up in the morning with a dull, throbbing pain in your lumbar region? Do you toss and turn in the night seeking out that magical position which may ease the discomfort along your spine? If so, you could just suffer from chronic back pain and might perhaps use a mattress upgrade to aid with this back pain.

I need to note that back pain can result from numerous lifestyle, genetic, and physical factors, so I like to consider changing your mattress as just one of several measures that could be taken to address the issue. If you are suffering from back pain, it is best to check with a medical professional to develop a plan that’ll address the underlying causes and symptoms. Bear in mind, nothing on this page ought to be taken as medical advice.

That having been said, a general rule of thumb is that you’ll need a supportive bed (note that firmness does NOT always equal support) with a soothing foam top layer to fill in the area at your lumbar area. You’ll also want something which keeps your shoulders at a nice alignment with your hips and is, of course, comfy.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

LEESA

If your main woe comes from stress in your upper back, you will want to make certain you snag a bed that provides as much pressure relief from the lumbar area as it does from the shoulders. The important thing here is a soft yet supportive foam top layer that’ll offer an even combination of aid across the body. Enter the all-foam Leesa mattress.

I like this bed for back pain problems because of the order of its foam layers, with a section of buoyant Avena foam on top of one of memory foam. This placement may not seem like a huge deal, but it actually does a lot of great work to relieve tension in the trunk. The sleeper gets to sink for pressure relief but is also buoyed on top of the structurewithout needing to sacrifice comfort for support.

BEAR

For those athletic sleepers from the group who suffer back pain from long days spent in the gym or out on the field, the Bear mattress could be the perfect bed for you. Designed with functionality in mind, the Bear is outfitted with graphite-infused memory foam for temperature regulation and comfort as well as a Celliant-blend cover, which some studies suggest can assist with recovery.

The mattress also sleeps firm, with my testers giving it an ordinary firmness score of 7, which you can compare to the business standard of 6.5 for medium firmness. This is a great level for many back sleepers, as it translates to solid support throughout the body.

CASPER

A recent trend in mattress design is to include zoned support in the layers of the bed. What this means is that one or two sections within a mattress will be comprised of not only a single sort of foam (say, memory foam) but a mixture of materials of different firmnesses. Essentially, the goal is to target various areas of the body in different ways to achieve the ultimate in comfort.

In my opinion, among the best examples of zoned support out there may be found in the Casper. The all-foam bed includes a transition layer built with two unique kinds of poly foam: a softer one at the ends of the bed and a firmer one in the center. This placement offers pressure relief to the neck and feet while also bringing solid support to the lumbar region, a fantastic combination for anyone coping with back pain.

BEST INNERSPRING

As far as mattresses are concerned, there is perhaps nothing more classic than an old-fashioned innerspring. These vibrant beds reigned supreme long before the arrival of all-foam versions, and though they have definitely waned in popularity through the years, there are still a variety of solid layouts out there in the world.

However, what makes a great innerspring bed? In my opinion, an excellent innerspring must sleep cool and have excellent bounce in addition to enough support to prevent you from feeling stuck in the arrangement.

WINKBEDS

Though innersprings are usually better for stomach and back sleepers, those who doze primarily on their sides may still find a lot to enjoy in one of these mattresses, as long as they incorporate a foam comfort layer for pressure relief.

1 such mattress which does this well is your WinkBeds mattress. Straightaway, the sleeper will experience two inches of super-soft gel memory foam, which provides immediate comfort and contouring to the shoulders and hips. Directly below this layer, you’ll find a coil-on-coil design that evokes the buoyant support of traditional innersprings.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

SAATVA

If you suffer from back pain, you’ll want a mattress that’s likely to fill in the space at your lumbar region with a few targeted pressure relief. There aren’t too many innersprings that can do this, but mercifully, the Saatva’s got your back (see what I did there?) .

Does the coil-on-coil design produce a bouncy mattress that keeps the sleeper on top of the structure, but the bed also features a zoned lumbar area specifically designed to alleviate back pain. This greatly reduces the amount of pressure that’s likely to form and generates amazing comfort.

BEST ADJUSTABLE FIRMNESS

As you have likely noticed, most of the info I’ve provided thus far is great for sleepers who know just what they want in their bed. But what about if you’re not so sure? Yes, you need pressure relief at your shoulders, but does that mean you have to sacrifice firmness? What about if your sleeping habits change on a dime based on what you do during the day?

If any of these thoughts ring true, you might want to invest in a bed with adjustable firmness. These models include layers that can be switched around or modified based on your needs in the moment, oscillating between the two firm and soft textures.

LAYLA

The Layla is an all-foam mattress unique in that it’s double-sided, so it can be oriented to feature a firm or soft feel based on a sleeper’s tastes. I should note that while you might think this flippability would lead to totally dramatic firmness differences, when my testers tried out the bed in both iterations, they gave the firmer side an average score of 6.5/10 and the milder side a 5.5/10.

This duality makes the Layla a good alternative for both sleepers and couples, who can alter the feel of the mattress anytime they need to shake up things in the bedroom.

LUXI 3-IN-1

As the name suggests, the Luxi 3-in-1 mattress is a fairly unique product in the sleeping world, as it could be oriented to achieve the feels of three completely different beds. What this basically means is that the mattress’s four layers can be reversed, switched, and arranged to make either a soft, medium-firm, or firm sleeping experience. This is great for sleepers who aren’t completely sure about what kind of vibe they’re after or ones who just like to change things up every once in a while.

NATUREPEDIC

Another customizable option is this eco-friendly mattress from Naturepedic. This hybrid bed is built with a natural cotton cover, a thick coating of latex, and a section of individually wrapped coils for pressure relief and support.

An additional bonus of this bed is that it is flexible and comes in a few different firmness options, including firm, cushion firm, plush, and ultra plush. The layers you will need to make these distinct feels will arrive in four different boxes, which you’ll then assemble to your satisfaction. Plus, if you sleep with a partner and are searching for a bed with different firmness levels, Naturepedic is more than pleased to create a personalized split design for you and your bedmate.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

BEST HYBRID

While some sleepers have particular feels that they desire from their mattresses (e.g., luxurious foam or elastic coils), an even larger majority of us prefer a combo platter of sorts when it comes to our beds. We like memory foam but do not need five inches of the stuff to feel comfortable. We need sinkage, but not too much, and a dollop of contouring, but only if it’s counteracted by the bouncy support of pocketed coils.

If any of this sounds familiar, you might be in the market for a hybrid mattress. These beds ditch the”all-X” structures of other versions in favor of ones that combine materials for a sleeping experience that truly does it all.

DREAMCLOUD

The great thing about hybrid mattresses is their ability to combine the pressure relief of foam with the aligning support of springs and the DreamCloud does exactly that. The soft foam on top is great for relaxation and the latex layers really help dissipate body heat to help sleep a bit cooler.

The DreamCloud’s pocketed coil system gives the mattress a solid feeling akin to a traditional innerspring mattress. The blend of latex layers and bounce from the coil system cause the sleeper to feel more on top of the mattress, permitting them to change positions without feeling stuck in the layers.

NEST BEDDING ALEXANDER HYBRID

With their ultra-supportive pocketed coil systems, many hybrids are amazing for sleepers who suffer from chronic pain. However, I would say my favorite from the group would have to be the Nest Bedding Alexander Hybrid, which combines this service with a super-soft foam-quilted cover for pressure relief.

This means that as soon as you lie on the bed, you’re going to experience immediate comfort as you sink through the cover and into the gel-infused memory foam directly below it. The materials are designed to fill in the area at your lumbar area and relieve the formation of pressure points throughout your body.

BROOKLYN BEDDING SIGNATURE

And last but certainly not least, no hybrid type could be complete without a nod to the Brooklyn Bedding Signature. This hybrid mattress is a revamped version of the brand’s flagship mattress and combines lush foam with pocketed coils for an impressive sleeping experience.

Here, the relief element comes from four inches of the brand’s proprietary TitanFlex foam, a soft substance that also responds quickly to pressure. This bounce is doubled once you add in the mattress’s pocketed coil system, which imbues the mattress with a few outstanding lift. The resulting structure allows you to sink in for lovely comfort while at the same time keeping you positioned on top of the mattress, a win-win in my book.

BEST MEMORY FOAM

What would a best mattress guide be without a section devoted to memory foam? Nearly every bed-in-a-box retailer uses the material in some fashion, either quilted to a pay or as the main relaxation layer of one of its mattresses.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

As a mattress material, memory foam is best known for its deep contouring and sinkage. At their best, these properties can provide the sleeper with enormous pressure relief and relaxation. However, the foam may also overheat and produce too intense of a”hug” that’ll leave you feeling stuck in the mattress. The key, then, is balance and finding a mattress that knows how to do memory foam right.

NECTAR

Featuring several layers of memory foam (including a inch quilted into the cover), the Nectar mattress is an ideal fit for anyone looking for a mattress that truly embodies the timeless material. This translates to is a ton of sinkage and body contouring to get some super satisfying pressure relief.

And while memory foam has a bit of a reputation for overheating, Nectar employs a gel infusion in its own foam layers to ensure that things stay cool while you sleep. Add to this a comparatively low motion transfer and you have got yourself a bed that’s as cozy for one as it’s for two.

AMERISLEEP

If you are interested in buying a memory foam mattress chiefly for its pressure-relieving benefits, you might want to consider snagging one of the great beds in the Amerisleep suite of mattresses. The line boasts five different models, which range from AS1 (super firm) all the way to AS5 (pillowy soft).

While the firmness range this is quite extreme, what unifies these mattresses is their excellent use of memory foam. As employed in the Amerisleep line, the memory foam works in tandem with the other materials to soothe restlessness, provide excellent comfort, and dissipate motion disturbance across the structure.

LOOM & LEAF

Another great memory foam option is your Loom & Leaf, which are my top pick for couples. It comes with a super-soft foam-quilted cover, a gel-infused comfort layer, and a section of memory foam for compression service.

This combo of lush materials allows the bed to truly embody all the best characteristics of the traditional material, namely its profound body contouring and sinkage. In the event you and your spouse are both lovers of memory foam or may simply benefit from the awesome pressure relief it will provide, you can not go wrong with this mattress.

BEST LATEX

If memory foam’s not really your thing, perhaps you’ll be in the marketplace for a mattress constructed with latex. Unlike memory foam, this material is famous for its bounce, cooling, and responsiveness, producing beds which are both comfortable and buoyant.

For my money, the finest latex mattresses use the foam to endow the structure with lift and breathability, either as a fun accent between softer layers or as a major star in its own right. Another great benefit of latex is that it is relatively simple to produce organically, making it a fantastic pick for environmentally conscious sleepers.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

ZENHAVEN

If you require something with a great deal of bounce, consider opting to get a firmer latex mattress like the Zenhaven. This one’s entirely built of organic Talalay latex, making for a compact bed that’s both buoyant and pressure-relieving.

While you’re planning to sink slightly through the top comfort layer, the latex does a wonderful job of lifting the sleeper up and out of the structure, helping to keep the spine in a terrific alignment. And of course that this bed is reversible, featuring both a lavish orientation (average firmness rating of 5.4/10) and a gentle firm one (average firmness rating of 6.75/10), meaning you can always change things up to satisfy your requirements.

CEDAR

For those eco-friendly dreamers eager to get their hands on an remarkable latex mattress, the Cedar from Brentwood Home might be the ideal bed.

The mattress is built with a normal hybrid design of foam comfort layers and a tall section of individually wrapped coils, but what sets it apart are the green materials used throughout. A natural wool cover gives way to a series of all-natural latex layers, which make up the comfort section of the bed. And below the pocketed coils, you will find a coconut husk base, which provides the structure with some stability.

NEST BEDDING HYBRID LATEX

And finally, there is the Nest Bedding Hybrid Latex, which is my best pick for anyone looking for a latex hybrid.

This mattress is constructed with layers of organic cotton, all-natural Talalay latex foam, and pocketed coils, stacking up to an impressive 13 inches of relaxation. The combination of materials creates a pleasant medium-firm texture (my testers gave it an average firmness score of 6.4/10) that offers plenty of pressure relief without that stuck-in-the-bed feeling. And like other latex mattresses, this Nest bed sleeps super-cool.

BEST BUDGET

Whether their substances warrant the cost or not, the unfortunate fact is that most beds are really expensive. While you should always consider a mattress purchase as an investment in your overall well-being, this doesn’t mean you will need to shell out thousands of dollars to secure a great night’s rest.

In fact, there are a great deal of marvelous beds out there that are not just incredibly comfortable but also cheap enough to leave both you and your wallet grinning from ear to ear. Read on for some best-value mattress picks.

GHOSTBED

My favorite mattress for the price is the GhostBed, which combines latex, gel-infused memory foam, and durable poly foam to get a sleeping experience that is cool, supportive, and incredibly pressure-relieving. The mattress also has great motion transfer and border support, making for a well-rounded mattress that is as good for a single sleeper because it is for a set of bedmates with different sleep preferences. With all these terrific qualities, this bed has to be super-expensive, right? Wrong! A GhostBed queen only costs $795, which can be quite the steal in the online mattress world.

TUFT & NEEDLE

Tuft & Needle has long been a favorite among bed-in-a-box enthusiasts, as much for its no-fuss foam construction because of its low price point. In comparison to other mattresses on the market, its queen size cost of just $575 is super-affordable and available to sleepers of all different budgets. And when you add in its own excellent motion transfer, deep pressure relief, and buoyant, medium-firm feel, this is a bed that is truly hard to pass up.

SPINDLE

If you are looking to snag a great deal on a more luxurious mattress, look no farther than the Spindle. This bed is crafted with all-natural materials, including wool batting, organic cotton, and three layers of Dunlop latex. What is unique about the Spindle is that it is fully adjustable. After completing a quick questionnaire (outlining your weight, age, and sleep preferences), Spindle will send you a customized parcel of latex layers, which you’ll then build at home to your own specifications. The end result is a bouncy and cool mattress tailor-made to your comfort at a price that can’t be beat.

BEST MATTRESSES FOR COUPLES

When considering what makes a bed perfect for couples, I consider a few distinct factors. Namely, I’m interested in figuring out how much of the surface area of the mattress you’re going to be able to use and whether or not you’re likely to be bothered by your partner’s moves in the middle of the night.

That means I will be drawn to beds that feature less movement transfer and excellent edge support. I will also be on the lookout for mattresses which exhibit feels that appeal to sleepers with unique preferences, since even the most harmonious partners can snooze in different ways.

PUFFY

The Puffy mattress, dubbed “the Internet’s most comfortable mattress” was designed and developed with the newest technology and premium excellent foam layers. It’s handmade and 100% manufactured in the USA.

The mattress is excellent for all kinds of sleepers since it poses a moderate level of firmness together with a sleeping surface that seems just like a cloud.

After 4 decades of study, foam formulas, growth, sleep trials, and hundreds of hours of optimizing the memory layers, then the Puffy mattress was created and designed to guarantee a sleep surface that’ll be ideal for a deep, restorative sleep.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

The Puffy mattress is just one of the most recent goods in the mattress marketplace and the organization believes they have crafted the best sleep system which will offer a cozy sleep on sleepers of all ages, sizes, and sleeping habits.

NECTAR

Whether you are just moving in with a new partner or struggling to make ends meet after a wedding, value can sometimes be the main element for couples to consider when making a major mattress buy. So before you get intimidated by some of the heftier price tags in this roundup, rest easy: I’ve got you!

Say hello to the Nectar mattress. Built with a thick layer of memory foam, this mattress gives a luxurious vibe for a fraction of the expense of similar mattresses on the market: At $795 for a queen, it is practically a steal! This combined with the mattress’s exceedingly good movement transfer results make it a excellent option for couples on a budget.

SAPIRA

As I mentioned up top, edge support will be one of the main things for couples to take into account, as it will let them know whether they’ll be able to use the whole surface of the bed. While there are a good deal of mattresses offering great edge support, I would say my favorite would have to be the Sapira.

This hybrid mattress is produced by Leesa and uses a mixture of Avena and memory foams for pressure relief in addition to a pocketed coil system for support. The interplay of these various materials produces a good sense of security that’s as strong at the center since it is at the sides, ensuring that you will never feel like you’re going to roll out of bed in the middle of the night.

BEST FOR SIDE SLEEPERS

If purchasing a new mattress, side sleepers want to be extra-careful about the kind of bed they purchase. If it’s too firm, pressure points are likely to form in the shoulders and hips. If it’s too soft, the sinkage could throw the spine out of alignment.

Personally, I find the best mattress type for side sleepers is one which has gentle top layers for cushiony support as well as a solid foundation to keep these plush materials stabilized. The secret is to find a mattress that pushes back as much as you push in so you never feel totally engulfed by the structure.

TOMORROW SLEEP

When side sleepers hear about the addition of pocketed coils in a bed, their first idea might be something along the lines of,”This bed will be far too firm for me!” Sometimes, this is true, but other times, it’s not. Take the Tomorrow Sleep, by way of instance, which is designed with coils, yes, but also a great deal of pressure-relieving foam.

The bed comes in two firmness options (soft and firm), each of which contain memory foam and poly foam border support. I’d suggest that side sleepers take a look at the soft model, as it includes three inches of memory foam up top for some pleasant contouring and relief.

CASPER WAVE

Billed as Casper’s most advanced mattress, the Wave is a fantastic alternative for side sleepers, as its five-foam-layer structure is designed especially with pressure relief in your mind.

This construction includes an interesting mix of bouncy latex, plush memory foam, and durable poly foam, which produces both deep body contouring and a pleasant lift. So while your shoulders and hips are very likely to experience a lot of cushiony support, this sinkage is not going to leave you feeling trapped at the materials.

BEST AT SLEEPING COOL

For a few of you out there, relaxation will be less about stress relief and support and more about temperature regulation. If you are a sleeper who runs hot, your main focus is likely going to be on figuring out how to sleep as cool as possible.

As you start your search, stay on the lookout for beds with individually wrapped coils, as the spaces between the packets encourage airflow throughout the structure. Latex is also great for cooling, as the material is excellent at absorbing and dispersing heat. Memory foam is traditionally not the best at keeping things cool, but frequently, the substance will be infused with gel to combat this attribute.

BROOKLYN BEDDING AURORA

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora is a fantastic mattress for those who must sleep cool. Boasting a hybrid design, the bed is built with a super-tall pocketed coil support system (8 inches of individually wrapped coils), which generates dynamic breathability.

The mattress also has a phase change cover, which is actually cool to the touch and helps you to absorb the sleeper’s body warmth. In addition to these great features, the Aurora also has amazing edge support and motion transfer, which would make it an awesome option for couples looking to keep things cool in the bedroom.

PURPLE

While there are a lot of things for sleepers to appreciate about a Purple (both its own pressure-relieving support and excellent motion transfer results come to mind), the characteristic that might be most appealing is that it is technically”temperature neutral.”

So what exactly does this term mean? Great question! Essentially, it means that the bed’s hyper-elastic polymer comfort layer (yes, that purple grid) is especially good at dispersing heat due to its open structure. This creates a pleasant balance throughout the mattress and ensures that one’s inner body temperature won’t be a preventative element in getting a good night’s sleep.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

GHOSTBED LUXE

Marketed as the”coolest bed in the world,” the GhostBed Luxe was crafted for people that sleep hot.

The mattress combats overheating with a phase-change cover, which regulates body temperature, as well as a thick comfort layer of gel memory foam. As we discussed in the intro, gel infusions help counteract the overheating properties of this substance, allowing sleepers to enjoy all the foam’s great benefits (sinkage, body contouring, pressure relief) without becoming too hot.

ADDITIONAL BEST MATTRESS CATEGORIES

We have loads of best mattress choices across Sleepopolis, and below are a couple of other popular categories, including the best mattress for heavy sleepers (250 pounds and up), best for combo sleepers, and best for stomach sleepers. Be sure to check around our website for plenty more picks based on your own preferences, positions, and physique!

BEST FOR HEAVIER SLEEPERS

When searching for a new bed, it can feel as if there are a whole lot of complicating factors to consider: materials, design, and cost are only a few. While these are all important things to consider, one factor that should never make your mattress look more difficult is your weight.

If you are a heavier sleeper, this might seem easier said than done, but there are actually a lot of fantastic beds out there built for sleepers of many different sizes, weights, and body types. These mattresses take everything that works well in different models (satisfying pressure relief, great support, cozy materials) and amp them up for a much more optimal sleeping experience.

BIG FIG

My favourite bed for heavier sleepers is hands down the Big Fig, as it was specifically intended for individuals who weigh more than 300 pounds.

A hybrid construction combines a top section of durable poly foams with bouncy pocketed coils for a firm and supportive feel. This blend of materials is finessed to maintain sleepers lying on top of the bed rather than in it, which is important for those of you who tend to sink straight through softer layers. Plus, every Big Fig comes with a specialized foundation, which adds even more durability and shape to the overall structure.

WINKBEDS PLUS

For heavier couples, there is no better mattress on the market compared to WinkBeds Plus. This mattress can also be outfitted with a hybrid design, which brings together bouncy latex with individually wrapped coils to get a sleep that is as pressure-relieving as it is supportive.

I should add that the pocketed coil system is zoned, providing the mattress with even more specialized support. This means that you’ll able to use the entire surface area of the bed and aren’t likely to feel stuck in the structure, which can sometimes be a problem for heavier sleepers lounging on beds not designed for their needs.

NEST BEDDING ALEXANDER SIGNATURE

Contrary to popular belief, memory foam isn’t the enemy of heavier sleepers. Though some say the substance’s classic contouring and sinkage properties do not offer enough support to sleepers of different sizes, I would argue that when combined with the ideal stuff, memory foam can bring a lot to the party!

A wonderful example of how this works is in the Nest Bedding Alexander Signature. The sleeper immediately meets a thick slab of 4-inch memory foam, which yields body contouring. But after sinking through this layer, they’ll encounter a collection of firmer foams, which help establish a healthy spine alignment and a great deal of solid support.

BEST FOR COMBO SLEEPERS

Having trouble deciding if you’re a tummy, back, or side sleeper? Do you tend to fall asleep in 1 position and wake up in an entirely different one? Perhaps you’re what I like to refer to as a combo sleeper, or someone who dozes in multiple positions.

What this means for your mattress search is that you are basically going to be looking for a bed having an abysmal feel, preferably one which strikes a satisfying balance between all its different materials. So if it’s a hybrid, for instance, you will want to make certain that the pressure relief of the foam does not cut in the support of the pocketed coils and vice versa.

Below, check out some of the beds that I think strike this balance particularly well.

LEESA

For people who spend time slumbering in multiple positions, there is no better choice than the flagship Leesa mattress. The balanced foam feel combines pressure relief and support for a sleep that is guaranteed to satisfy a wide assortment of sleepers.

I should note that the mattress is on the firmer side (my testers gave it an average firmness rating of 7/10) and does a excellent job of lifting the hips up and out of the structure. Plus, the mattress’s top layer of Avena foam imbues the bed with an additional oomph of supportive bounce to fight that stuck-in-the-bed feeling.

NEW PURPLE

Speaking of supportive bounce, one of the bounciest beds I’ve tried up to now in 2018 is the New Purple. This hybrid revamp of the brand’s flagship model comes in three different firmness levels, all which are designed to suit a broad range of sleepers.

Along with this buoyant lift from the layer of pocketed coils, the mattress also includes a bunch of pressure relief thanks to its hyper-elastic polymer comfort grid. This section is fantastic at evenly distributing weight throughout the bed, allowing it to specifically respond to various amounts of pressure from each part of the body. It follows that regardless of how you sleep, you’re bound to find some pretty incredible comfort.

NECTAR

Designed with a combination of memory foam and high-density poly foam, the Nectar is a super-comfortable mattress that provides awesome pressure relief in numerous positions.

While the almost four inches of memory foam up top may make back and stomach sleepers run for the hills, the mattress actually has a wonderful moderate firmness to it, so you will find a solid mixture of sinkage and support. This feel will satisfy a lot of different sleepers, from those who need cushioning in the shoulders all of the way to those needing targeted relief in the lumbar region.

BEST MATTRESSES FOR STOMACH SLEEPERS

If you are a stomach sleeper, you’ll want to discover a firm mattress that will position your shoulders and buttocks in an even line. Sound easy enough? Unfortunately, not necessarily. A lot of beds which charge themselves as being firm sacrifice good support in the title of said firmness, resulting in mattresses that don’t do much of anything in any way.   Tomorrow Sleep Mattress

So the question remains: Are there beds out there that can keep a stomach sleeper’s body level enough for healthy spinal alignment while also being comfortable? The answer is a resounding YES!

For some examples, check out my favorite mattresses for stomach sleepers below.

WINKBEDS

Featuring coil-on-coil construction, the WinkBeds hybrid makes a wonderful mattress alternative for stomach sleepers. The combination of both microcoils and pocketed coils creates an ultra-supportive sleeping experience that keeps the sleeper positioned on top of the bed.

An added bonus is that the mattress also includes a plush pillow top for pressure relief and comes in three different firmness options, so you will definitely have the ability to find a model that fits with your specific sleep needs.

ZENHAVEN

For those stomach sleepers in search of an all-foam mattress, you can not go wrong with the Zenhaven, which derives a bounty of buoyant support from its all-latex construction.

As you’ll probably experience a little bit of sinkage when you first lie down on the bed, you might find that the layers work together to buoy you in addition to the mattress. This is great for stomach sleepers, who have to maintain their shoulders and buttocks from sinking too far into the structure, which may throw their spinal alignment way out of whack. I should say that the Zenhaven comes in two firmness options: plush or firm.

Very Best MATTRESS REQUIREMENTS AND SCORING

Choosing the best mattress brands for 2018 wasn’t a simple task. There are hundreds of companies in the world, and that I personally tested out and reviewed dozens of different versions in my quest to answer the seemingly innocuous question: What is the best mattress?

And even though I’ve landed on what I think are some really fabulous picks, I want to admit that this list is always evolving and that my opinions are likely to change as newer beds emerge in the marketplace.

That being said, all mattresses included on this list had to meet the following criteria:

TIME FRAME

My selections for the best mattresses to purchase in 2018 all had to be available in 2017 for at least six months before this review, with a small advantage given to those models on the market for a year or more.

Why is this significant? For one thing, the longer a business’s been in business, the more confidence I have in its ability to deliver on warranty promises, return policies, and product availability. Second, it tells me that people are responding to its goods, which means the materials are durable and the layouts are well-executed. And finally, it implies that the company is going to be around for the long haul, which makes it a solid investment.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

In my view, the overall customer experience is just as important as an exceptional item. If a brand has an amazing mattress but negligent customer service agents or confusing policies, I can not in good faith include it on this list.

So how do I ensure that a company has top-notch customer service? I’m constantly scouring the Web for third party testimonials, looking carefully to see if users are neglected or obtained lackluster service from a specific retailer. I also keep my eyes on social media for any brand red flags, which I then investigate on my own.

Furthermore, I rely on all of you! If I notice that our amazing Sleepopolis readers are reacting in a particularly good or bad way to a company, I’ll correct my rankings so, always giving precedence to brands which have a killer history of positive customer service testimonials.

VALUE

As more and more bed-in-a-box companies surface in the digital ether, value has become an increasingly important factor for me to look at when choosing the best mattresses of any given year.

And when I refer to worth, I am not just talking about a low price point. A great value is achieved when the selling price is well below the average market cost for what you would ordinarily will need to cover a mattress of the quality and functionality. In this manner, mattresses in all points on the pricing scale can be considered an exceptional value.

COMPANY INTEGRITY

Last, but certainly not least, let’s talk about business integrity. While different folks will consider ethics in different ways, for me, it comes down to a few crucial questions:

  • How does a company treat its clients, both those who are happy and those with complaints?
  • How transparent is a brand about the types of materials it uses and from where it sources those substances?
  • Has the company received any accolades voted on by users?
  • What, if any, outreach did the company do in 2017? In 2018?
  • What are a few of the brand’s key values? How does this enact those values in its day-to-day operations?

It does not take long to work out the answers to these questions, and after I do, I use them to inform my rankings as much as comfort or price. In my experience, the best mattress brands are those which not only want to be the very best but truly need to do right by the sleepers who rest in their beds night after night.

If you’re seeking the best mattress, there are a few other questions that you may want answered also.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A MATTRESS?

To find their very best mattress, most buyers will consider cost, firmness, adjustability, and sleep style before purchasing. You might want to consult your doctor first if you experience any kind of pain after sleeping. This can allow you to choose the best mattress for you.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED A NEW MATTRESS?

How long is a mattress designed to last? No matter what kind of mattress you buy, most should be replaced every ten years for a good night’s rest and optimal relaxation. Even in case you find your dream mattress, you will want to think about a replacement in 10 years.  Tomorrow Sleep Mattress
